Eight British tourists are in police custody after clashing with police at the Balneario beach club in Illetas. A waiter and two police officers were injured. The group were on a stag party. The incident started when a waiter asked them not to throw beer cans and rubbish into the sea.

According to the Calvia council their reaction was "extremely violent." In a press statement the council said: "they started attacking Beach Club staff. Two off-duty Guardia Civil officers and six police officers tried to bring the situation under control but they were met with violence from the tourists. Finally eight were arrested and taken to the Municipal police station where they spent the night in police cells."

So far seven people have reported the group to police for their unruly behaviour. Police said that the group had been drinking excessively and they were all staying in a Palma hotel.

Esperanza Catala, Calvia councillor in charge of police, held talks this morning with the Mayor of Calvia, Juan Antonio Amengual, and they have given their full support to the owners and staff at the Beach Club and the police.

Catala said that they would be operating a zero tolerance system with such incidents. "If they can´t behave they should go elsewhere," she said.
