The Balearics registered the second highest percentage fall in unemployment in April among the regions of Spain. The number of unemployed in the Balearics fell in April by 9,033 in comparison with the same month last year. With this decline, the Balearics’ unemployment figure now stands at 66,756, the lowest April figure since 2009. This reduction continues a positive trend that has realised thirty months of uninterrupted improvement in the unemployment statistics since November 2012.
According to the report issued by the national Ministry of Employment and Social Security yesterday, the Balearics is the region of Spain with the second greatest fall in the inter-annual unemployment rate. Only Cantabria, with a cut of 13.9% has performed better.
The islands’ unemployed divide unequally between men and women. There are almost 6,000 more women unemployed (36,200 in all) than men. The number of those below the age of 25 who are unemployed (both sexes) is 7,707.
Among foreign workers, the level of unemployment has fallen by 15.5%;there are 2,302 fewer who are out of work compared with April last year. (However, it might well be that this fall reflects the fact that foreign workers have left the Balearics and/or have come off the employment register.)
