Come on, let’s not kid ourselves. Why have and do most people come on holiday to Mallorca? For the sea, sun and sand plus some delicious food and wine and where better to enjoy the island’s gastronomic delights than at a beach bar, preferably one where you can dine while your toes dangle in the sea.

As Morgan said, it is nothing to do with the Balearic government. Poor journalism.
One of the rare occasions where I have to agree with you, Humphrey. However, it's not the Balearic government that's behind it. It's the Costas, the Spanish coastal authority. Why they can accept Costa del Sol being lined with beach bars for 20km while penalising a handful in Mallorca defies logic. And while I'm all in favour of beach bars in resorts and various other places (and truly enjoy that occasionally) it's hardly the "essence of Mallorca". It might be for you and a few others, but most tourists or locals don't come here to just sit at a beach bar. But you can get that in Costa del Sol, if that's what you need. But yes, it needs to stop. I'd certainly like an explanation at least. Defies logic.
Given that there are no public toilets to be had anywhere on the island shore is it not just a case for hygiene if nothing else. As always they are trying to take the fun out of going to the beach.
