The gospel according to B. B. King
Riley B. King, better known as B. B. King, rose from a cotton plantation in Mississippi to become one of the world’s foremost blues musicians. His guitar style placed him in the vanguard of electric guitarists of the twentieth century. His first exposure to music was with his church’s gospel choir in Mississippi, and this background points to how the blues were at least partly a product of church music. It is also appropriate for the penultimate concert in this year’s Jazz Voyeur Festival. ‘A Gospel Celebration of B. B. King’, this features the Chicago Mass Choir supported by the Palma Gospel Singers. Founded in 1988, the Chicago Mass Choir’s debut album, released in 1991, led to their being named best new artist at the Gospel Music Excellence Awards. There have now been fifteen albums in all that have ranked high on the Billboard charts.
