The Christmas lights are turned on in Palma this Thursday. There are fairs for the esclata-sang mushroom in Mancor, rice in Sa Pobla and "vi novell" (nouveau) in Santa Maria. The Mancor fair features a demons' fire-run on Friday night. Bunyola has its Santa Catalina fair as well. Legendary British folk guitarist/singer Martin Simpson is in Palma on Wednesday evening.

Majorca's biggest fair of all - Inca's Dijous Bo - is this Thursday (and also Wednesday, which is really Dimecres Bo). The Caimari Olive Fair takes place over the weekend and the Llubi Honey Fair is on Sunday. Absolute highlight of the music week is legendary guitarist Al Di Meola at Palma's Trui Theatre on Wednesday for the Jazz Voyeur Festival.

The Pollensa Fair features a look back at tourism in the early years of the "boom"; Muro Fair has its how big is your pumpkin competition; Inca's Night of Fire is on Saturday; the Jazz Voyeur Festival makes a welcome return on Friday - the first concert is Andrea Motis & The Joan Chamorro Quartet; and The Furrow Collective, best band in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017, are in Palma on Friday and Sa Pobla on Saturday.

A big week for fairs. Inca has its first fair, this one devoted to the land; it's the Felanitx "pebre bord" paprika fair, and the Campos one for sobrassadas and other pig products; Consell features a wine fair for the first time; and Santanyi has a demons fire-run on Saturday night. The Balearic Symphony Orchestra's new season starts. There are two days of vinyl and memorabilia plus a lot of live music at Palma Arena, and on Saturday evening it is the procession in Palma for La Beata.

The fourth and final fair in Llucmajor at the weekend, Cala Ratjada holds its fresh fish gastronomy event, Algaida has its fair, there is street food in Estellencs and Port Adriano, Playa de Muro has twelve bodegas for two evenings of wine, art, tapas and music, and the musical Chicago is at the auditorium in Palma.

What's on in Majorca: 26 September-1 October
The fairs now start to come thick and fast. Alcudia's is always extremely popular, with a highlight being the dances and procession of the bigheads S'Estol Rei en Jaume; Llucmajor starts its series of four fairs with the first for Sant Miquel, which features the dances of the cavallet cotoners; Alaro's on Sunday will have the "somera" donkey and its dance. And Esporles has its fair, which is devoted to sweets and pastries. The Capella Mallorquina choir celebrates fifty years with a free concert at Palma Cathedral, and Syrian pianist Aeham Ahmad performs at the Teatre Principal in Palma.
